DANNY - Pawrent: Joe and Beth Pike
Danny: When we decided our other rescue, Tia was ready for a new companion, we told our children. I told my children my dream dog was a Great Dane a long time ago but did not realize they would remember. One day our daughter Tori called and said there is a Great Dane on Craigslist that someone is giving away. He looked really skinny, and our daughter was worried about him. She called the number and set up a meet and greet for us in the Rhino market parking lot in Charlotte. When we arrived that night, we met a skinny black and white giant who smelled and was covered in fleas but only weighed 110 lbs. My husband took one look and him and whispered to me, we have to take him or he might not make it. I reached out to pet him and he gently licked my hand. I asked the people who were giving him away why he was so skinny, and they replied he was a picky eater, that did not turn out to be the case. They did have vet records for his first 16 weeks from his previous owner, but they hadn’t taken him to the vet since they bought him. We loaded him into the car and took him home. We fed him that night, and he gobbled down his food and
then preceded to have an upset stomach. The next day we took him to our vet. She was immediately worried because he was so underweight. She put him on a strict diet of eating 3 times a day with pumpkin added to his food. We gave him a bath and a flea pill and introduced him to Tia. He loved her immediately, but she wasn’t quite sure of the big giant puppy. As the days turned into weeks, he began to thrive. We kept up with regular vet visits until our vet felt he was out of the woods. He and Tia became friends who played tug of war every day on a regular basis. Tia became less anxious because she had a new brother and Danny grew into a healthy and happy 140lb Great Dane.
